IAR&T PROFESSOR REPRESENTS AFRICA AT THE WORLD SOIL SCIENCE CONGRESS IN CHINA
In a monumental and historic move, an icon and soil expert from the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Ibadan, Professor Funmilayo Ande represented not just the Institution or nation, but the entire African Continent as a keynote Speaker at the 23rd World Congress of Soil Science (WCSS), held between 7th and 12th June, 2026 in Nanjing, China.
Prof. Ande’s representation at the Congress does not only put the Institute’s roadmap on a global scale but also reflects the Institute’s possession of quality ideas and experts, especially in the area of soil research.
As one of the distinguished eight (8) keynote speakers invited for the Congress across the World, she delivered a keynote address titled _”Soil Wealth and Global Security: Harnessing Multifunctional Roles of Soils and Regenerative Agriculture for Climate and Environmental Resilience”._ The crux of her presentation focused on the concept of leveraging soil information as a “soil wealth bank” to guide sustainable land use, while discussing actionable solutions to the lingering impacts of land degradation.
She had the opportunity to highlight how regenerative agricultural practices directly dictate agricultural productivity, economic resilience, and global stability. Her submission resonated deeply within international frameworks and mirrored local efforts to protect land and livelihoods.
With the presence of global experts, researchers, and policymakers, the Congress afforded her the opportunity to extensively discuss the importance of boosting soil health and enhancing long-term environmental monitoring through improved data systems and regenerative agriculture. The Congress featured a Gala night, treating participants to exquisite refreshments and traditional display.
This milestone achievement is, no doubt, a testament to the Institute’s resolve to agricultural research and development, nationally and globally.
