  • Development of Improved varieties

The Institute has developed and released two improved Kenaf Varieties (Ifeken DI 400 and Ifeken 400) with complementary environment friendly and cost effective production and processing techniques.

  • Seed Production

Availability of quality seed is crucial to expanded kenaf production. The Programme ensure availability of quality seeds of kenaf varieties annually in collaboration with the Crop and Seed Production Unit of the Institute. 

  •  Value Addition Product Development

One of the ways of widening the market for kenaf fibre and other products is the development of diverse products of both domestic and industrial importance. Kenaf fibre has been used in the production of different products such as shopping bags, paper production and other hand spun fabric materials (100% kenaf fibre), cornice, and ceiling tiles in addition to its traditional use in produce bags. The Programme has carried out studies in the areas of using kenaf leaves and seed in livestock feeds.

  •  Group Participation among Farmers

In efforts to promote expanded production of the crop, the Programmes outreach and extension activities has resulted into formation of farmers into groups with tremendous success recorded in the registration of the groups as a commodity association that enjoys national spread. The Programme played active role in the activities of the associated organization that are involved in production, processing, utilization and marketing of kenaf products.

  • Training and Workshops

The Institute has also conducted training and empowerment programmes to build farmers and extension capacity for production and utilization of Kenaf. This particular activity is accorded the desired attention as part of the strategic plan to develop the industry.
