The 2018 in-house report of Information Technology Unit

The dynamics of the research world place much emphasis on adequate use of Information and Communication Technology in all aspects of research activities for effective service delivery. In the same vein, there is a fast evolving perception of research as a global community whereby research Institutes are expected to keep with the global pace in agricultural research. The Information and Technology Unit (ITU) of the Institute has the mandate of providing cutting-edge ICT-based services for effective research and extension service delivery. The Unit also deploys its human and material resources for effective connection of the Institute with the global agricultural research community. In executing this mandates, the activities of the unit is structured into three main sub-units namely;

  • Network Administration and Compute-related Services
  • Biometrics and Statistical Services
  •  Capacity Building and Technical Support Services.

Our Focus

Provision of functional Information Technology System for effective research and extension service delivery

This is done by;

  1. Prompt facility upgrade and maintenance for effective and efficient IT-based service delivery.
  2. Providing efficient statistical and database management services for robust research findings and information dissemination
  3. Facilitating capacity building for efficient service delivery and enhanced productivity.
  4. Exploring viable partnership for the deployment of ICT-based platforms and gadgets for dissemination of extension information.

RESEARCH OUTPUT/PRODUCT OF THE UNIT

  • The Unit has continued to design, manage and upgrade the Institute’s website to accommodate new aspirations and promote effective linkage with the global community.
  • New innovations and partnership are constantly explored to provide cost-effective and efficient platforms for extension information dissemination using ICT.
  • Human and materials resources have also been continuously deployed to provide biometric and robust statistical services for valid and logical conclusions from research studies.
  • The Unit has also organized training workshops for different categories of staff on experimental designs and statistical analysis, use of Computers systems and software applications to specific job schedules of relevance to the Institute activities and mandates.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  1. Creation of weather database for south west Nigeria
  2. Creation of ICT-based platform for dissemination of extension information to farmers and other stakeholders on their mobile phones.
