Kenaf and Jute Improvement Programme conducts researches into genetic improvement, generation and development of sustainable demand driven production, protection and processing technologies of kenaf and jute for farmers’ and industrial use for enhanced economic growth and development.
Kenaf is a fibre crop of industrial importance. It is a multipurpose crop with numerous utilization potentials and has been identified as a crop that can be used to reposition the economy of Nigeria. The bast and core fibres of the crop have been identified as promising fibre source in the paper, building, automobile, pharmaceutical and numerous foods and feed industries. The programme has well-seasoned and experienced scientists from various disciplines including Agronomy, Breeding and Seed Technology, Pathology, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural extension and rural development and Agricultural engineering.
